On 03 May 2017, the Munich office of BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT will hold an “Advanced Patent Law Seminar” hosted by patent lawyer Nils T. F. Schmid. The seminar is aimed
at medium-sized companies with prior knowledge in this field. The patent lawyers Nils T. F. Schmid, Dr. Stefan Schohe, Eva Liesegang, Dr. Steffen Schmidt and Felix Hermann 
will cover various aspects of patent law. The topics covered stretch from “Patent strategy: Opportunities and Risks” to “Enforcement of Patent Rights: Patent Infringement” as well as “Invalidity/Opposition” and “License Law”. The seminar begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. with subsequent get-together.

  • “Patent registration strategies / defense strategies” (Ch. W. Appelt)
  • “Patent Requirements – Novelty and Innovative Activity” (Dr. M. Hartig)

On 17 May 2017, the Bremen office of BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT will hold a “Patent Seminar” hosted by patent lawyer Dr Volker Scholz. The seminar is geared in particular at medium-sized companies. The patent attorneys Dr. Martin Erbacher, Dipl.-Inf. Fritz Jetzek, Dr. Uwe Manasse, Dr. Matthias Philipp as well as Dr. Volker Scholz will guide attendees through various elements of patent law. The topics covered:

  • Good invention reporting – what should be considered?
  • Opposition and invalidity proceedings – dangers and opportunities
  • License law – an introduction
  • Design – the underestimated means of protection

EPI Seminar: “Copyright Contract Law 2017 – New regulations for film industry” on 28 March 2017.

The Erich Pommer Institute (EPI) will hold a seminar on 26 March 2017 entitled “Copyright Contract Law 2017 – New regulations for the film industry” in Berlin. The background to the event is the copyright contract law reform, which entered into force on 1 March 2017. This reform brings with it various changes for copyright holders and, in particular, for collecting companies operating in the film industry. The focus of the seminar is the need to make changes in the film industry in light of the reform and the options for those changes. The two BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT lawyers Dr. Julian Waiblinger and Dr. Stanislaus Jaworski will focus in the seminar in particular on the following:

  • New information requirements – what the accounts department must know
  • Exclusive rights of use – exploitation by competitor after ten years?
  • Re-filming – The end of the unlimited grant of exclusive rights for producers?

The seminar will take place from 16:00 to 19:00 in the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Jägerstrasse 22/23, 10117 Berlin.

In June 2015, the Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale (ALAI) held an international conference in Bonn on “Remuneration for the use of works: Exclusivity vs. other approaches”. Walter de Gruyter Verlag has now published the conference transcript, which contains contributions to the two conference days on 18.06. and 19.06.2015 and which illustrates issues from an international perspective. Here, Dr Martin Schafer publishes his contribution on “Possible roles for CMOs in new business models” in which he sets out and analyses various functions of collection companies in novel business models. Dr Martin Schaefer is a Member of the Board of ALAI Germany; the rights of collection companies and collection agencies are among his special fields of interest.

Prof H. Goddar to speak at National Law School of University of India

Under the auspices of the National Law School of the University of India, Bengaluru, in collaboration with MHRD Chair on Intellectual Property Rights and the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights and Advocacy (CIPRA), a round-table event will take place on the issue of “Evolving Jurisprudence on Patent Remedies (PatRem)” on 25 and 26 March 2017. Professor Dr. Heinz Goddar will speak at the event on the issue of “Practice, Pros and Cons of Bifurcation in Patent Litigation – The View of a Practitioner”. More details on the event.

BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT lawyers have contributed a report to the Neue Juristische Wochenschrift (NJW 11/2017, page 780) entitled „Jurisprudence and Legislation in Copyright Law 2016“. For a number of years, the copyright law experts from BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT have regularly contributed summaries to the NJW on developments in copyright law at the national and the EU level and report on case law. Their conclusion this year: “The legislature has been very active in 2016. The rights of collection companies has now been specified in the VGG. The reform of copyright contract law with various new regulations for remuneration will place the industry before new challenges. At the European level, it remains to be seen in which direction proposals for regulations and directives will move.” Subscribers can read the complete article here.
