Volker Scholz assists German and international clients with all patent law related aspects in the field of chemistry and pharmacy, especially technical chemistry, polymer chemistry, and electro chemistry. His focus not only lies in the support of examination procedures of patent applications at German and international patent offices, but also in the enforcement of opposition and invalidation procedures as well as infringement suits.

He is also very active in counseling and implementing strategies for patent portfolios, and regularly advises regarding the employee’s invention act and the licensing agreement act.Volker Scholz studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg and the Bangor University (Wales). His dissertation at the University of Hamburg dealt with metal organic catalysis of polymerization reactions. Here, he investigated the behavior of newly synthetized half sandwich titanium compounds as catalyst in the polymerization of styrene and butadiene.He has been working at BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT since 1999. In 2002, he received his admission as a German patent attorney and as a representative at the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Karl-Heinz Metten is mainly interested in the fields of engineering plastics (manufacture and applications) and catalysts.He studied chemistry and computer science at the University of Bochum and the University of Dortmund. He received his PhD in organic chemistry focusing on stereoselective synthesis of drug targets and the chemistry of saccharides.

As a postdoctoral fellow he specialized in organometallic chemistry at Imperial College, London (GB), and in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge (GB). Jan specializes in the life sciences, especially pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, immunology, plant genetics, biochemistry, and biotechnology. For more than 15 years, he has represented German and international clients, such as innovative life science and pharmaceutical companies and universities, in all fields of intellectual property. He places a particular focus on strategic IP planning, the generation of IP portfolios, and the enforcement of IP rights, as well as on opposition and nullity proceedings.

Jan studied biology at the Free University Berlin, and earned his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin on the topic of the genetic basis of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria. After finalizing his patent attorney training in Berlin and Munich, he worked in the biotech group of a large U.S. patent law firm in Frankfurt am Main.

Since 2008, Jan is an affiliate instructor of law and guest lecturer at the University of Washington, School of Law, Seattle, WA, USA. He also teaches at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria, and regularly leads seminars with respect to patent claim drafting and the preparation of freedom-to-operate analyses for the FORUM Institute. He is the author of numerous patent law articles in German and international journals. From 2012 on, JUVE Handbuch ranks Jan Krauss as one of the leading names among German patent attorneys with pharma as their technical focus. For several years, Legal 500 Germany recommends him in the field of patent law.

He is a member of the Biotechnology Committee of the Bar of German Patent Attorneys, the past president of the Life Sciences Committee of UNION-IP, and a past president of the Life Sciences Committee of the Licensing Executive Society International (LESI). Ute Kilger is assisting pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as academic institutes in all kinds of patent related issues concerning the obtaining and enforcement of property rights, due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, contract negotiations, and licensing agreements. Her counseling is driven by the understanding that a patent strategy has to add value to the company. She manages large patent portfolios in view of the business strategies as well as the cost-benefit analysis. She is involved in patent infringement processes where she is representing her clients in nullity suits up to the German Federal Supreme Court of Justice.

Ute Kilger studied chemistry at the University of Merseburg and did her PhD at the Free University of Berlin in the Department of Biochemistry focusing on protein chemistry, receptor structures, and signal transduction. In her doctoral research, she was investigating the structure of proteins by FTIR-spectroscopy. For more than ten years, she was active in the patent departments of large pharmaceutical companies. She did her patent attorney training in the patent section of Boehringer Mannheim GmbH, and subsequently worked as a patent expert for Roche Diagnostics GmbH. Ute Kilger gained expertise in US patent law when she spent several months abroad in an American patent law firm. In 2002, she joined the patent department of Schering AG, where she became the head of the department in 2004, being responsible for the global patenting in the area of molecular imaging. She is licensed as a German and European patent attorney.

Ute Kilger is a lecturer for the MBA BioMed course “Intellectual Property” at the University of Potsdam, and for the SPARK educational program of the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Moreover, she is giving courses in the Charité program.

Best Lawyers 2018 is counting her as one of the most important patent attorneys in the field of biotechnology in Germany. Legal 500 Germany 2015 highlights her accomplishments related to license agreements.

Since August 2009, she has been working as a partner of BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT.

Prof. Dr. Heinz Goddar (Patent Attorney, European Patent and Trademark Attorney) is a partner at BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT. His office is located in Munich. From his technical education Prof. Dr. Goddar is a physicist.He teaches Patent and Licensing Law as an honorary Professor for Intelectual Property at the University of Bremen and at the Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC), Munich as well as at various foreign universities. Martin Erbacher is mainly involved in prosecuting, maintaining, defending, and challenging patents and utility models in numerous fields of chemistry. His work focuses particularly on the technical fields of organic light emitting diodes and solar cells, battery technology, catalytic processes, and pharmacy.

Martin Erbacher studied chemistry at the University of Bremen and worked as a research associate at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the University of Bremen. In his diploma thesis he was working on synthesis and application of metallic nanoparticles. He received his PhD in the field of synthesis of organic dyes, electrochemistry, and dye sensitized solar cells.

Sebastian Engels advises clients in all aspects of trade mark, copyright, and unfair competition law. Sebastian Engels studied law at the University of Constance (Germany) and the University of Cork (Ireland), specializing in competition law and intellectual property. Markus Engelhard is active in all fields of life sciences, pharmacology, and biotechnology, having a particular focus on therapeutic biomolecules and pharmaceutically active agents. After graduation, he obtained his PhD with an Oliver Gatty Studentship from the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Cambridge, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in research and teaching.

Since 1998, Markus Engelhard is with BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT. As part of his professional activities, he has lectured on behalf of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in its “Regional Capacity Building Workshops on Patent Drafting” for developing countries and has trained patent agents from nearly 30 countries.

He also lectures regularly on patent law issues both in Germany and abroad, with much of his work focusing on Asia. The National Law University Delhi (NLUD), India, appointed him as visiting faculty at the beginning of 2014. He is an Honorary International Chair Professor at the National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan since 2014.
