Jan Goering counsels mainly small and medium-sized German enterprises which are active in the fields of classical mechanical engineering and mechatronics in developing and implementing a tailor-made patent strategy. Among other things, he is active in prosecuting patents in examination proceedings before the German, European, and international patent offices. Jan Goering is also experienced in adversarial patent proceedings. Besides the enforcement of intellectual property rights in litigation proceedings, he is intensively involved in opposition and nullity proceedings for the removal of competitors’ patents which are not worthy of protection. Furthermore, he supports clients in preserving and obtaining ownership rights to inventions in the context of co-development agreements. A special focus of Jan Goering’s consulting activities is the law on employee inventions.

Jan Goering studied mechanical engineering at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen University and at the Technical University of Munich. In the course of his studies, he concentrated on medical and micro-mechanical engineering. As a mechanical engineer, he worked in the research and development departments of several medium sized companies in the fields of medical engineering and plastics processing in Germany as well as in the United States of America.

Jan Goering worked for several years as in-house patent attorney in the patent department of a medium-sized family business. He began working for BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT in 2012 and was sworn in as a German patent attorney in 2015. Since 2016, he is a European patent attorney.

Lennart-Knud Liefeith handles national and international technical protection rights before the European Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the German Patent and Trademark Office. As a patent attorney, he accompanies patent applications from drafting, through examination, to grant for optimal protection of the invention. Lennart-Knud Liefeith has well-founded experience in opposition proceedings, both in defending and drafting oppositions, as well as in appeal proceedings to enforce the applicant’s interests before the Office. In addition, Lennart-Knud Liefeith conducts prior art searches for patent applications, oppositions and freedom-to-operate analyses.

Lennart-Knud Liefeith is specialized in the fields of physics, semiconductor technology and electronics. He studied classical physics with a focus on solid state physics and laser physics at the University of Hamburg. He wrote his master thesis during a one-year research stay at Hokkaido University in Japan. In 2016 he received his PhD in cooperation with Hokkaido University in the field of solid state and semiconductor physics in Hamburg. During his doctoral studies, he worked on the injection of spin-polarized currents into complex semiconductor heterostructures to develop devices for new storage possibilities and new computing operations. Lennart-Knud Liefeith is author of several publications in reviewed journals.

In 2017 he started his training as a German patent attorney and European patent attorney in a renowned IP law firm in Hamburg. Since 2020, Lennart-Knud Liefeith has been a German Patent Attorney and has worked for BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT in Frankfurt.

Lennart-Knud Liefeith is a member of the German Physical Society.

Klaus Seranski is specialised in medical products and technology, mechanical engineering, electro-technology and textile technology and consults globally on how to register industrial property rights and defend them in grant proceedings as well as on the enforcement of technical industrial property rights in infringement proceedings. He coordinates international patent infringement proceedings, defends technical industrial property rights in opposition and invalidity proceedings and represents clients in invalidity appeal proceedings before the Federal Supreme Court. The focus of his consultancy work is on the development and structuring of industrial property right portfolios as well as on patent vindication, involvement in unfair competition proceedings and extra-judicial arbitration.

After completing his degree in physics at the University of Bonn, Klaus Seranski completed his doctoral thesis there at the Institute of Physical Chemistry.  During this time, he was involved in interdisciplinary special research fields and worked on international research projects. In 1996, he completed his training as patent lawyer and in the same year was admitted as European Patent Attorney.Before coming to BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT, Klaus Seranski was a partner at an IP boutique in Munich.As partner of the Office of Career Strategy, Yale University, Klaus Seranski has been involved in this network since 2014. He works to train Yale students in the programme.

Karl-Heinz Metten is mainly interested in the fields of engineering plastics (manufacture and applications) and catalysts.He studied chemistry and computer science at the University of Bochum and the University of Dortmund. He received his PhD in organic chemistry focusing on stereoselective synthesis of drug targets and the chemistry of saccharides.

Industries

As a postdoctoral fellow he specialized in organometallic chemistry at Imperial College, London (GB), and in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge (GB). After working as a patent attorney trainee in a patent law firm in Hamburg, he joined the patent and license department of a major German chemical company.

The JUVE Handbook 2017/2018 cites him as one of the patent attorneys who is frequently recommended.

Daniel Herrmann advises start-ups, SMEs and large corporations, both domestic and foreign, in the field of intellectual property rights, in particular patents and utility models. He focuses on the development and defence of patent portfolios with an emphasis on computer-implemented inventions („emerging technologies“), medical devices, optics, electronics and mechanical engineering. In this context, he regularly represents clients in filing, opposition and appeal procedures before the European Patent Office (EPO), the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (GPTO) and the Federal Patent Court in Germany. He also conducts patent infringement and nullity proceedings before the German courts and he performs searches and freedom-to-operate analyses.

One focus of his practice lies in the development of optimized national, european and international patent protection strategies for inventions of start-ups at the foundation of the enterprise and market expansion. In this context, he regularly advises start-ups within the scope of international entrepreneur networks and at business incubators in Germany, in particular in the Rhine-Main region.

Daniel Herrmann studied physics at the University of Mainz, the University of Würzburg and the University of Texas at Austin (USA), where he also obtained his Master’s degree. He obtained a PhD in physics in 2011 at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich. During his dissertation, he worked on the generation of ultrafast laser pulses and used them to resolve photo-induced charge processes in novel organic solar cells via ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy.

In 2012, he began his training as a German and European patent attorney in a Munich-based internationally operating US law firm. Daniel Herrmann joined BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT in 2015. He was admitted as a professional representative before the European Patent Office in 2015, and was admitted as a German patent attorney after his training in January 2016.

“The Legal 500 – Germany 2020” mentions Daniel Herrmann with praise for patent law, especially for applications and official proceedings.Daniel Herrmann has published several scientific papers and conference proceedings. He obtained awards from the German National Academic Foundation, the German Physical Society (DPG), and the Optical Society of America (OSA).

Daniel Herrmann is member of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (epi) – selected by the epi board for the editorial committee, which is responsible the content of the “epi Information” journal, amongst other aspects – as well as the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRUR), the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI), the German Association of Intellectual Property Experts (VPP), the IP Union, and the German Physicists’ Association (DPG).
