BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Prof. Dr. Heinz Goddar will give a speech at the CASRIP Global Innovation Law Summit in Seattle on 22 July 2016 on the subject of “How to Use Global Patent Litigation Strategies to Deal with Non-Producing Entities (NPEs)”. BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Martin Schaefer has contributed the article “The curtain closed and many open questions?” in the specialist magazine musikmarkt (07/2016). Dr Schaefer provides an overview of the current state and future direction of law following two court judgements which are of greatest relevance for copyright lawyers in the music industry: The court judgements in question are Martin Vogels vs. VG Wort by the Federal Supreme Court and the judgement of the Federal Constitutional Court in “Metall auf Metall”. From 13 to 15 July 2016, the fifth Tech Open Air event will take place, an interdisciplinary technology festival. Around 175 satellite events will take place across the entire city offering the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange. BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Sebastian Engels, Dr. Stanislaus Jaworski and Dr. Jörn Plettig will, as one of these satellite events, offer “Legal Speed Dating Intellectual Property Law” on 15 July 2016. It is aimed at start-ups and will take place from 10 a.m. to midday in the Rainmaking Loft´s Bar in 10969 Berlin.

The reference work “Competition and Patent Law in the Pharmaceutical Sector. An International Perspective” has now been published in the Kluwe Law International range (publisher: G. Muscolo, G. Pitruzzella). Here, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partners Prof Heinz Goddar, Prof Jan Bernd Nordemann and Dr. Julian Waiblinger contributed in Chapter 3 “The Perspective from Europe” the article “Germany: Patent Settlements and Drug Discount Agreements in Light of European and German Antitrust Law”. The work focuses in particular on the interplay between Intellectual Property (IP) on the one hand and Competition Law on the other, in particular in the pharmaceuticals sector. As part of the Tech Open Air 2016 in Berlin, the InsurTech Meetup #3 (6.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.) will take place on 13 July 2016. The event is geared towards start-ups in the insurance technology sector (InsurTech), insurers and insurance brokers. Here, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Stanislaus Jaworski will give the keynote speech on “How will the BVK v CHECK24 judgment influence the InsurTech industry?”. He will explain in how far the judgement from Munich Regional Court, expected on the day of the event, in the case between the Federal Association of Germany Insurance Brokers (BVK) and the CHECK24 comparison site for insurance products will impact on the business models of InsurTech start-ups. The core of the issue is whether online insurance brokers are subject to the same obligations as offline insurance brokers. Representing BVK in the proceedings before Munich Regional Court are BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partners Prof Jan Bernd Nordemann, LL.M. and Dr. Stanislaus Jaworski. On 8 July 2018 from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Humboldt University Berlin, GRUR and ALAI Germany will together hold the symposium “Restitution and Copyright Law: Extension of copyright protection period for victims of National Socialism?” in Berlin. The symposium will focus on the question of whether there’s a moral duty to make restitution for past wrongs and extend copyright protection for works of victims of National Socialism or provide some other form of moral recognition.
