From 23 to 26 September 2014, the 28th Annual Conference of MARQUES ((Association of European Trade Mark Owners) will take place in Copenhagen, which this year focuses on “Traditional Brands in the Digital Market”. On 24 September, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Björn Bahlmann will take part in Session 4 and discuss “Experiences with the Madrid Trade Mark Law System” from the perspective of an experienced user of this system.

An app for “Fromm/Nordemann Copyright” is now available in Apple and Android app store. The app was developed in collaboration with the Kohlhammer Verlag and Wesemann NewMedia. The app accompanies the new 11th edition of the renowned copyright commentary Fromm/Nordemann which – with the exception of Criminal Copyright Infringement – is exclusively compiled by BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT lawyers. The app includes current legislation on copyright law, thematically ordered legislative materials on copyright, copyright-related EU directives, international conventions on copyright law as well as common remuneration regulations. The app “FN Urheberrecht” is helpful for all practitioners working in copyright. It can be used on smartphones or on the iPad in German.

The seminars are geared towards trademark owners with prior knowledge, but without experience in this field. Dr. Rudolf Böckenholt, Dr. Carl-Richard Haarmann, Dr. Martin Wirtz and Dr. Anke Nordemann-Schiffel will lead participants through various aspects of trademark and competition law. The following issues will be dealt with this year: Strategic right management – what to monitor and what to tackle”, “Main proceedings in infringement claims – progression, attack and defence strategies” as well as “current case law of European and German courts”. Also explained will be “how products can be effectively protected (and how not) – in trademark, industrial design and competition law”. The seminars begin at 2p.m. and finish around 5p.m.

“AIPPI World Intellectual Property Congress” with speech by Prof J. B. Nordemann.

This year’s AIPPI World Intellectual Property Congress will take place between 14 and 17 September 2014 in Toronto, Canada. Here, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Prof. Dr. Jan B. Nordemann will take part in the Workshop VIII “IP implications of 3D printing” on 17 September. 3D printing is viewed as the “third industrial revolution” and gives rise to various new questions in terms of IP rights.

From 12 to 16 September 2014, the International Broadcasting Convention will take place in Amsterdam. With 50,000 visitors from 170 countries, it is one of the most important international trade fairs for film, TV and radio production and distribution. On 12 Spetember, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Martin Schaefer will appear on the panel “Give me the Right – Consumer Perspective on the Rights and Wrongs of Rights” and will discuss this issue with other international experts. They will explain the current legal and practical obstacles confronting the user such as, for instance, territorial restriction and lack of interoperability. The focus will be how television and radio can better adapt to the needs of consumers in future in view of copyright and against the backdrop of increasing interconnectivity of online devices.

On 8 September 2014, a workshop will take place in Maastricht on “Secondary liability of hosting Internet Service Providers in the European Union”. The workshop is organised jointly by Maastrict Universty, the China-EU School of Law (China Universit) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). As part of this event, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Prof. Dr. Jan B. Nordemann will give a speech on the “Liability of hosting providers: EU framework and German implementation”.

At the end of August, “Patent Law in Greater China” was published by Stefan Luginbuehl and Peter Ganea. The work provides a comprehensive overview of current developments, processes and standards in various aspects of patent law in China, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau.
The three BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partners Prof Christian Czychowski, Prof Heinz Goddar and Prof Jan B. Nordemann co-authored the chapter “Standard-Essential Patents and Injunctive Relief” and also contributed “Comments from the European Perspective”. Berlin Music Week takes place this year between 3 and 8 September 2014 in Berlin. The conference programme including the VUT Indie Days focuses on Recorded Music, Interactive and Tech & Start-ups.
